Heavy Gear RPG Character Creation

Getting your character made in Heavy Gear is pretty simple once you know the concepts. It can be done before the game, but is really best done with all the players and the Narrator together as a sort of session zero. Today we are going to run through the process.

Building the Team, National Origin, and Lifepath

The player characters in Heavy Gear are referred to as a Team. They might be a military, corporate contractors, or even a group of criminals brought together for a heist. The important part is that they are in this together. The Team works for a Sponsor, such as the military the Team serves in, a corporate entity, a revolutionary movement, or just about anything else. The Sponsor helps determine which vehicles the Team can choose from.

The Spearhead Tiger's got Claws

HACS-08MG-D SPEARHEAD TIGER

The Spearhead Tiger was a development based on the successful HACS-01MG-C/A Spearhead, also known as the Spearhead Hunter. Original plans for additional Spearhead inspired designs called for augmenting the Jaguar but the Tiger was selected after Operation Icarus concluded. CEF actions during Icarus caused significant damage to UMF and Northco facilities which forced Northco to prioritize production efforts. The Jaguar production lines were stretched thin, and a flurry of new orders in preparation for the looming invasion consumed nearly a decade of future production runs. Instead of diverting Jaguars, Northco opted to change its plans for a future Spearhead design by using the Tiger instead of the Jaguar. Tiger, being an older design, already had plenty of inventory and Northco quickly implemented a Spearhead style package. The result was the Spearhead Tiger, an advanced command unit for commanders desiring a bit more durability.

Miranda Petite Joins The Black Talons

Miranda and Julius

Miranda Petite first made a name for herself as a child prodigy in gymnastics. At a very young age she was selected for participation in olympic level competition for her native league the Humanist Alliance. As an adult she joined the MILICIA and soon became a member of the SIU special forces. Her highly competitive nature also led her to serve a rotation as a duelist for her home regiment. During the Interpolar War, Miranda was a member of KADA and thus missed out on most of the fighting. She was soon recruited into the Black Talon organization after its founding. Her natural skills, independent mindset, and general lack of interest in her homeland made her a perfect candidate. She even took her Cobra, Julius, with her and had Julius updated to Dark Cobra specs. Her initial tour saw her mostly serving on Terra Nova, clearing out CEF forces in hiding. During the events of Operation Icarus she earned multiple commendations for bravery and valor but was specifically called out for her leadership of her commanding officer was killed. Despite her position as a team leader, she took control of a larger Talon operation and led it with skill and tactical acumen. Her actions earned her a promotion and saw her tapped to lead Talon forces on Caprice. This assignment would not come to pass however as the CEF invasion started before she could leave, and she has remained on Terra Nova for the foreseeable future.

The Rock Mamba Climbs into View

T-XM1500 ROCK MAMBA

The Southern Republic is currently interested in expanding its ability to dominate the mountainous areas of Terra Nova in general and of especially in the Badlands -an airborne insertion in many of these areas is not always possible and a specialized strike team is often required. Also, while this is somewhat unavowed, the Rock Mamba’s abilities would prove invaluable in dislodging Northern forces from their defensive locations in the mountains should a North-South conflict occur. For that very reason, a special emphasis has been placed on the Rock Mamba’s ability to travel the rough terrain native to the mountainous areas. The Black Mamba, as one of the best Gears of the South, seemed the perfect subject to modify.

The Shadow of Gomorrah Strikes!

Talon Lead

The pilot known as “The Shadow of Gomorrah” is actually a Black Talon member who has gone native to assist the Liberati. The pilot, whose name and identity are classified, served as the team leader for Talon 1 on Caprice during their now famous operation. Rumors and conspiracy theorists often claim this individual to be the terrorist Ernesto Jaxon although opponents of this theory point to his presence on Terra Nova during Talon 1’s operation. When the Black Talons returned to Caprice, this pilot was detached as an advisor to the Liberati but soon went silent. They would eventually reappear, participating in raids and operations alongside Liberati cells. Contacts within the Liberati and CEF 5th Column have reported the name “The Shadow of Gomorrah” being used to identify this pilot. Black Talon command considers this agent to have “gone native” although they have aided Talon teams on Caprice without incident. The Shadow pilots their Dark Mamba which saw action on Caprice with Talon 1. It has since been heavily modified to use local weaponry and parts in an effort to stay serviceable. If they need something more specific, Talon teams are more than willing to provide those parts after receiving the Shadow’s assistance during operations.

Edward Scott, Sergeant Major

Astute students of the events surrounding the Polar War will recognize the name Edward Scott. Scott served as the regimental duelist for the 67th “Harvest Wind” Gear regiment of the Northern Guard during the Polar War. The most notable actions he participated in surrounded the naval duel between the CNCS’s Vigilance and the AST’s Draco which resulted in the surrender of the latter after a duel between Scott and the traitorous Jennifer Brockton. Despite his actions Scott became a pariah to those outside his regiment. Events during the battle with the Draco saw Scott engage his regimental commander in an honor duel and kill him which forever stained his reputation. After the Polar War Scott would remain with the Northern Guard where he would serve as an instructor for young gear pilots. With the looming threat of a new invasion, Scott was recalled to the 67th for active duty where he quickly regained his position as Duelist. He would participate in the devastating Battle of Sorrento which would exhaust the Northern Guard as an offensive military force. While sifting through regimental records during the Sorrento operations, Scott learned of a secret that had been kept from him surrounding the events of Vigilance - Draco battle relating to the the Southern operative using the name Jennifer Brockton. When recovery crews salvaged the wreck of his opponent’s machine after the battle there were no remains in the cockpit.

CEF G-16 Garrison Frame

While many consider the invasion of Terra Nova by CEF forces in 1951 as the start of the most recent conflict, that is false. Several cycles before the invasion the CEF launched Operation Icarus, a raid on the Helios system with the objective of destroying as much Terra Novan orbital infrastructure and fleet support as possible. The operation did succeed in this goal however it had a secondary mission to insert CEF forces on Terra Nova in preparation for the impending invasion. These forces would go on to disrupt orbital defense stations, communications and sensor towers and be the main muscle behind the coup in Port Arthur at the start of the invasion. Cutoff from the CEF main forces and lacking autofacs common to invasion fleets, these units were forced to adapt local technology to keep their machines combat effective. After the invasion, these field modifications would be adapted, standardized, and rolled out en masse. The cycles following the invasion saw the CEF forces pushed to the limit, attempting to occupy huge swathes of the planet in the face of a hostile population. Units on garrison duty got these field modified units of which the G series frames are the central arm.
