The Baxter Engineering Tank and Thunder Aller

ENT-2 BAXTER

The Baxter answers a need for a dedicated battlefield “towtruck” capable of salvaging the heaviest Main Battle Tank. The Baxter is based on the chassis of the Klemm, the most common light battle tank in the Norlight army. In this case, however, the chassis has been extensively modified and strengthened for its new role. The engine and transmission have both been replaced by more powerful systems for an increased towing capacity. The turret is a new high torque model that carries a sturdy crane capable of lifting nearly 50 tons with the tank appropriately braced. A hydraulically activated earthmoving blade is attached to the front of the hull for filling in ditches and digging earthworks. Attachment points for digging cannons are provided on both sides of the hull, which also features numerous handles and tie- down rings. The Northern Guard engineering companies attached to mechanized units always have at least one Baxter in service, more if they can manage to get them. Since they are unarmed, Baxters are kept out of the way during battles.

The Heavy Shooter Dartjäger

OACS-O1M/HRRV HEAVY SHOOTER DARTJÄGER

The Dartjäger rapid deployment vehicle has had a distinguished period of service, being deployed across the Badlands and the Antarctic to deal rapidly with trouble spots. The relatively light weapons payload of the Dart has been problematic for its pilots, however. Deploying well ahead of any fire-support units, Dart pilots can rapidly find themselves out-gunned if the opposition they face proves greater than anticipated by intelligence reports. A rapid-deployment fire-support vehicle was needed to travel alongside Dartjägers, so MILICIA technicians set to work. It was critical that the unit — dubbed the Heavy Shooter — be able to match the standard Dart pace for pace, so it quickly became clear that multiple heavy weapons would prove too heavy for the task at hand. A Rucker unguided mortar was chosen for its durability and low price-tag; all other weapons were stripped to save weight. The disadvantage of the mortar is its inability to fire at close range, forcing the Heavy Shooter to hang back from the main body of the unit it is supporting. In 1950 the success of the Dartjäger led to it being a test platform for more powerful mortars. Similar in size to the previous mortar, the newer weapon system provides an improved payload, while remaining lightweight, at the expense of a bit of ammunition storage. These changes have made it less effective in prolonged engagements, but still ample for the shorter skirmishes it’s designed for. To prevent a failure of communication due to harsh conditions or electronic counter measures, the Gear is also equipped with an Obelisk Electronics VOX-90 communications system.

The Silverscale Hears Everything

OACS-03M/COM ELINT SILVERSCALE

Elint Silverscale

The Basilisk proved its worth to the armies of the South by becoming the basis for a variety of technically advanced variants which belie the chassis’ humble beginnings. The rugged and reliable frame came to house valuable electronics carried into the battlefield for various specialized roles. The Elint Silverscale — part of the Silverscale family of Basilisk variants — was just one such model, a very effective electronic intelligence platform. The Gear was designed to travel quickly over contested ground and monitor enemy frequencies, jamming them if need be, but, more importantly, gathering valuable tactical information from intra- and inter-unit communications. The Elint was heavily modified for its task, having many of its composite steel alloy armor plates replaced by lighter ballistic cloth in order to reduce overall weight and increase speed. In addition to the target designator/sensor mast used by the Silverscale, the Elint was also equipped with secondary sensor pods on each shoulder and with a large listening dish. Together this package consisted of some of the most sophisticated electronic signal gathering equipment on the battlefield at that time. Offensive firepower was very limited, however, with the Elint shedding its Vogel rocket pod and PR-25 autocannon. A simple DP76 20 mm pack gun was provided for defensive purposes. All in all, the Gear was not designed for combat, with few weapons, light armor and very vulnerable systems.

EAZ - Earth Administrative Zone Sub-List

EAZ Snakeye Mamba
In the opening phases of the War for Terra Nova, the CEF assault into the heart of the Southern Republic was shattered. Presented with a direct threat to the very existence of the State, the SRA’s Strategic Arms branch was directed to turn its fearsome arsenal against the CEF landing zones, resulting in unimaginable horror and devastation wrought upon the lands of the Republic. Earth however was no stranger to nuclear combat and the South’s arsenal, while fearsome, was a limited resource intended primarily for deterrence. Surviving CEF formations struck out from their landing zones, launching their assault on the capitol Port Oasis and its vital strategic spaceport, intending to isolate the city and its fearsome defenses in an attempt to seize the port. The resulting combat saw unspeakable bloodshed among MILICIA and Republican Army units as the grim business of urban combat took its toll, with the once leisurely Citizens Defense Corps even the Youth Guard used to take positions in the front line.

The Nash Basilisk Stalks Its Prey

OACS-03M/AB NASH BASILISK

The Nash Basilisk was one of the earliest southern gears to be equipped with a radar absorbent material coating which resulted in an early stealth gear. The modifications were originally made by technicians from the MILICIA’s 11th Gear Regiment, the Rapiers, in the TN 1860s. The Rapiers treated more favorably than most MILICIA units. Consequently, it was the Rapiers who found that, in open ground, the gear remained difficult to conceal even after the coating was applied. However, when used in combination with natural cover, the gear’s new skin permitted the vehicle to approach targets while very likely remaining undetected. Should the gear remain immobile in cover, stealth performance goes from good to excellent. The Rapiers immediately began using the new model as an ambush specialist, equipping it with heavy weaponry such as bazookas.

The Gold Mamba Has All the Bling

T-XM1500/2 GOLD MAMBA

The design team has worked simultaneously on a second prototype for the Rock Mamba, following a slightly unusual philosophy. Whereas most companies create a machine, see what does not work with it, then work their way up to a cost-efficient solution, the engineers on this project worked with a second machine on the side on which they would install the most expensive system to solve any problems the first machine would have. Technicians would then tweak it and whittle it down to make the system as inexpensive as possible, removing parts which, in practice, would not really affect the system’s performance in this particular case, and so on. As a result, the budget of the entire project has reached unheard-of levels, making the Gold Mamba the most expensive Gear since the original J├Ąger prototype, hence the name.

Southern City Militia Cadre

The core units of the City Militia Defense Forces are the Gear cadres which field either older Gears or newer cheaper Asps. These units perform the role of a stop-gap measure until assistance from a regular military unit arrives. Most of the pilots in these Gears are retired veterans or members of the Youth Guard training to be ready for duty in the SRA or MILICIA.

Building the Rock Mamba

Venomous Rock Mamba Switchback

The Rock mamba is a pretty interesting variant of the traditional Black Mamba. The design for spike guns for climbing has changed since the original art in the Southern Vehicle Compendium, so we’re going to modernize it’s look a bit. Furthermore, while the artwork shows spikes on the knees, it’s pretty hard to add fiddly little spikes to those tiny knee covers, but we’ll take that inspiration to the shoulders instead, keeping a very pokey aesthetic.

The Rock Mamba Climbs into View

T-XM1500 ROCK MAMBA

The Southern Republic is currently interested in expanding its ability to dominate the mountainous areas of Terra Nova in general and of especially in the Badlands -an airborne insertion in many of these areas is not always possible and a specialized strike team is often required. Also, while this is somewhat unavowed, the Rock Mamba’s abilities would prove invaluable in dislodging Northern forces from their defensive locations in the mountains should a North-South conflict occur. For that very reason, a special emphasis has been placed on the Rock Mamba’s ability to travel the rough terrain native to the mountainous areas. The Black Mamba, as one of the best Gears of the South, seemed the perfect subject to modify.

Southern Camouflage Patterns

While the majority of Terra Nova is covered in badlands and desert, the Northern and Southern regions have a diverse range off woods, prairies, jungles and swamps. Unsurprisingly, Terra Nova forces will paint their equipment to blend into the environment, so while you might normally see South in shades of green, if they’re fighting in the Badlands, they’re going to stick out.
