Heavy Gear III: Pre-Emptively Answered Questions

If you’re anything like me you have a lot of questions, so here are some answers.

Am I dreaming?

You are fully awake. Heavy Gear III is real, and has just been announced with that awesome trailer.

Who are Flameborn Games?

Flameborn Games are a new video game studio based out of Montreal, made up of industry veterans. Many of their staff are huge fans of Heavy Gear and are excited at the opportunity to make a game in the Heavy Gear setting.

What will the gameplay be like?

In structural terms Heavy Gear III is closer to a traditional Action-RPG than the mission-based layout of the previous games, with an explorable main hub and greater focus on the story and setting. The fast-paced combat and deep Gear customization are still around and will be better than ever.

When is this coming out?

Not soon. Definitely not before the 30th anniversary of the video game. The HGIII team wants to make sure the game is in the best possible shape before releasing it.

Is this the same game as the old canceled Heavy Gear III?

You’re not supposed to know about that one. But no, this is an entirely new game set on Terra Nova and returning to the roots of the franchise. That said, the new game will include features both new and old, including some that were supposed to be introduced in the original plan for III.

Is this a direct sequel to Heavy Gear II?

Heavy Gear III tells a new story set during the Interpolar War, before the Black Talons were ever formed. In terms of continuity it’s closer to Heavy Gear I and Storyline Book 2. The story of the game will fill in some of the gaps that were left due to the sudden transition from the Interpolar War to an interstellar plotline.

Will the CEF/Black Talons/Caprice/Eden/House Kurita/My great-aunt be in the game?

Heavy Gear III is deliberately focusing on the original setup for Heavy Gear: the Confederated Northern City-States fighting the Allied Southern Territories for control of the Badlands. The emphasis is on exploring Terra Nova and the factions that existed on it in the 1930s, so the other colonies won’t receive any significant focus.

That said, who knows what might show up in the sandy wastes…

Will this game focus on eSports? 

Heavy Gear III will not be designed for eSports, blockchain integration, microtransactions, live-service, cryptocurrency, generative AI, or any of the million other buzzwords that people keep promising will be the Next Big Thing. The sole focus of Heavy Gear III is on delivering a high-quality singleplayer game.

Will this game finally reveal the truth behind the Stoneheads?
