Unit of Renown - The Wolf and Falcon Brigades

One of the opening acts of the War for Terra Nova was a coup in Port Arthur. CEF loyalists turned on their fellows and seized control of the city-state. Colonel Arthur made it out alive but many of his trusted allies were executed by the CEF loyalists. Much of the GREL population was put to work as effectively slave labor, turning Port Arthur back into the military beachhead it was intended to be. As Colonel Arthur rallied his followers to retake the city, inside the inhabitants were in near open rebellion. Led by Colonel Proust, the GREL portions of the population resisted CEF occupation hard and would later prove instrumental in the retaking of the city. NuCoal and allied forces were organized into two “brigades” codenamed Wolf and Falcon. Wolf consisted of much of Arthur’s tank and infantry forces while Falcon was predominantly gears. These two forces alternated playing hammer and anvil as they destroyed CEF units sent to contest them. Eventually they made it to Port Arthur and the resistance forces helped force the CEF to abandon the city’s defenses. Proust himself fled, taking a huge amount of equipment, supplies and new recruits with him just as Colonel Arthurs forces breached the gates.

The aftermath of the coup left Port Arthur in ruins. The Port Arthur Korps, pride of Port Arthur and NuCoal was effectively destroyed and would need to be rebuilt. Originally PAK was 5 brigades, and it would take years before it could make that strength again. The remnants of the Falcon and Wolf brigade would be used as the basis of the first two brigades brought online. Reinforced with surviving PAK personnel and whatever equipment they could beg, borrow or steal, it would be these units that fought at Temple Heights in 1951. The two have since been joined by Lion and Hawk brigades in the rebuilt Port Arthur.

Using Units of Renown in Heavy Gear Blitz!

The universe of Heavy Gear is full of famous regiments, companies and other military formations. These are collectively called Units of Renown and are represented as add on rules to sub-lists.

Each Unit of Renown will state which sub-list is uses. It counts as this sub-list for rules purposes and gets all benefits of this sub-list unless otherwise noted.

Using the Wolf Brigade in Heavy Gear Blitz

Port Arthur Formation: This force uses the rules for Port Arthur Korps, with the following modifications:

  • GREL Crews: Voltiguer, Hetairoi, Fusilier and Sampsons in this force may purchase the GREL Crew upgrade for +1TV. Models with this upgrade gain SP:+1.

  • Direct Sources: This force may not use the Allies rule.

  • Tank Aces: When selecting a duelist for this force, the duelist can also be a vehicle. Vehicles with the VTOL trait may not be selected as duelists.

Using the Falcon Brigade in Heavy Gear Blitz

Port Arthur Formation: This force uses the rules for Port Arthur Korps, with the following modifications:

  • GREL Pilots: Gears in this force may purchase the GREL Pilots upgrade for +1TV. Models with this upgrade gain SP:+1. Models that already have SP:+1 on their profile may not purchase this upgrade.

  • Gear Force: This force may not use the Tank Commanders or Tank Jockeys rules.

Designer Notes: While there are upgrades for Grel Crew in the CEF army, we wanted to do something slightly different here. Grel Crew kept the name so that it would interact with the Medium and Light Hovertank Squadron rules, but the bonus has changed to reflect the Grel using equipment not originally designed for them. They have great interfacing capabilities with their specialized CEF equipment, but major modifications have to be made for them to even fit inside most gears comfortably.
